Team Scrimmage During Football Practice Day #5

Aug. 1, 2017

For the first time this fall, the San Jose State University football team used its practice time primarily for scrimmaging from the first-string players through the entire lineup.

"It was the first time it was full `go.' There was no coaching. They're going out there playing seeing what they know and we (the offense) made some plays, some big time plays, broke some tackles. It was fun," said wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings, who describes his group of wide receivers as a `fun group.'

One of his `fun group' is junior Jeremy Kelly. After playing two seasons a safety, Kelly made the move to wide receiver in the spring.

"Out of high school, I pretty much played receivers my high school years. My senior year, I played linebacker. We didn't have a whole lot of depth on defense and I had a great year. That led me to come to San Jose to play defense, but in the back of mind, I was always watching the offense thinking what could happen if I was on offense," said Kelly, who is comfortable playing either as an outside or inside receiver in the new Spartan offensive scheme. "I talked to Coach Caragher before he left and he suggested we could make that change happen. When Coach Brennan and his staff came over, they went along with it and gave me a chance."

Ethan Aguayo is another Spartan in a position switch. After earning a spot in the starting lineup last season as a combination outside linebacker/safety, Aguayo is entrenched as an inside linebacker.

"The spring, I was trying to learn the ropes of it. I was hanging around Frank (Ginda) more trying to see what he does, what he reads. (In the) spring, I was getting my foot in the water. Now, it's full go. I'm 100 percent confident and ready for action," said the third year sophomore who is up to 225 pounds.

Practices continue through the week starting at 9:00 a.m. The team's first weekend scrimmage is Saturday, August 5, at 11:00 a.m. The public is invited. Parking is available in the Park & Ride Lot across the street from the practice field.
