Davis, Calif.--- The San José State University men's water polo team (3-3) finished the Aggie Shootout with a record of 2-2 after splitting both games on Sunday. Jacob Mercep had 11 goals in the last two games of the tournament.
Game 3: San JoséState 18, Santa Clara 10
The Spartans came out firing in day two of the Aggie Shootout. Sophomore Finn Pardon, and Freshman Jacob Mercep each had a five-goal game. This is a career high for Finn Pardon.
Cade Baldridge and Bendeguz Toth each had two goals in the match to help seal the win for the team.
TJ Palmer started in net for the Spartans, and held the Broncos to just four goals in the first half making five saves. Taking over in the second half was Crispin Hawkins, who made six saves to close out the game.
"We came out against SCU and played the way were capable of, good defense and improved shooting," said Spartan head coach Bruce Watson. "TJ Palmer played very well in the goal. Finn (Pardon) and Jacob Mercep really picked up the offense. Ben Hauschild had a good defensive game as well."
Game 4: Pacific 23, San JoséState 12
In the final game of the Aggie Shootout the Spartans fell to conference opponent Pacific.
Jacob Mercep scored six times giving himself a single game career high as a Spartan. Also, chipping in two goals was Justin Pickering and Luka Cupic.
TJ Palmer started the first half of the game, and made two saves. Conrad Gordon entered in the third period, and finished with three saves.
"The UOP game was a really good teaching moment for us, facing a top ranked team, and their press was an eye opener. Hopefully it will help the guys understand the physicality of DI water polo," said coach Watson.
The men's water polo team next competes at the MPSF Tournament in Los Angeles, California on September 22.
