San Francisco, Calif. - The San José State men's cross country team finished in fifth place at the 25th USF Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning in Golden Gate Park led by senior Huruy Zeratsion who came across in 12th place.

"Huruy had a solid summer of training and today that effort showed," head coach Brad Wick said. "It was very hot (90 degrees) and some of our guys felt the effect more than others."

Zeratsion came across the line in 26:16.5 and was followed by Josue Gonzalez, a senior, who completed four laps of the 2k course in 26:58.8 and 24th place.

"Josue was one of the guys who really suffered in the heat today," Wick added. "We have a lot of new faces this year and with some (minor injuries) over the summer, we really couldn't take advantage of a solid two months to build up to the season.

"Right now we are getting in the work we would have had, so things will be a bit slower coming along, but by the conference meet, we will be ready to compete at our highest level.

Mario Perez was the third Spartan to finish. He crossed the line 31st place in 27:12.4. Junior Nicholas Liebmann was 40th in 27:34.5 and Charlie Pope, a sophomore, was 44th in 27:51.6.

Freshmen Collin DeJulio finished in 28:65.7, 55th place and Henry Fisher was 67th in 29:32.7.

San Francisco was the meet winner with 29 points followed by Santa Clara (42 pts), California (84 pts) and Alaska Anchorage (103 pts). SJSU was fifth with 116 points

The Spartans are right back at it next Saturday, September 9, at the Fresno Invitational in Fresno, Calif.
