San Jose, Calif.--- The San José State Spartans had a 11-7 comeback win against the Santa Clara Broncos Saturday at West Valley College. Coach Bruce Watson is now 3-0 in opening games against Santa Clara as a Spartan.
Santa Clara had the lead 6-2 going into halftime with the help of three Sam Toriggino goals.
"We had to play stronger defense. We were a little nervous, we were throwing the ball away. The team knew they could play better," said Spartan head coach Bruce Watson. "We came out in the third, and made some adjustments. We made some switches on who to put in, and take out. It made a big difference."
The Spartans came out firing in the second half scoring seven unanswered goals to take the lead. Ben Hauschild racked up four assists in the second half to help the Spartans to a 11-7 win over the Broncos. A team of Freshman and sophomores scored nine of the Spartan's 11 goals.
"Once we started playing stronger defense it was easier for us to shut them down. It was our first game with a bunch of freshman and sophomores. We have to worry about diaper rash."
The Spartan's next match is at UC Davis on September 9 at 1:00 p.m.
