San Francisco, Calif. - In its first competition of the year, the San José State women's cross country team placed five runners in the top-20 and finished in second place at the 25th USF Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning in Golden Gate Park.

"The team did a nice job today, especially in the 90 degree heat," head coach Brad Wick said. "We didn't want to be too strong. Our goal is to be peaking at the end of the season. We had some nice performances today, but what makes me happy is that we have a lot of room to grow."

In her seventh collegiate race, sophomore Jennifer Sandoval continued her streak of being the first Spartan across the line, with a sixth place finish and a time of 21:42.75. Seven seconds behind Sandoval, junior Adilene Aldapa had the best meet finish of her career, seventh place in 21:49.3.

"About 3k into it, a pack of six or seven runners broke away," Wick said. "Jenny and Adilene, who were right there, stayed relaxed and hung with the group. I feel Adilene has really turned a corner and is in a new place this year. Her result bears that out."

Freshman Kai Bohannon was the team's top newcomer with a time of 22:42.0 and a 15th place finish. "Kai was patient in the first half of the race," added Wick, "and then moved up in the second half."

Jeanette Zambrano, a junior, came home in 16th place in 22:52.9 and junior Carmen Contreras was 19th in 23:17.1.

Sophomore Camilla Hanson was 35th and Mikayla Akers, a freshman, was 50th in times of 24:29.2 and 26:41.6, respectively.

With five Spartans scoring among the top-20 finishers, SJSU's 56 points was behind only San Francisco who had the top-four across the line and scored 18 points.

The Spartans are right back at it next Saturday, September 9, at the Fresno Invitational in Fresno, Calif.
