San Jose, Calif.--- Senior forward Jeremy Romero scored two goals as the San José State men's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's, 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
"We brought in 16 new players, and they are slowly starting to mesh," said Spartan head coach Simon Tobin. "We are still learning, and they are still newcomers. We will get better and better every game, but we have a long way to go."
Romero scored in the 35th minute on a big kick from goalkeeper Alex Clewis.
"Jeremy is fast, and he told me every so often to give him chances," said Clewis who picked up his first win and his first shutout for San Jose State to go along with his assist. Clewis was credited with two saves. "I wanted to put the ball in the corner of the field, and he made a great play on it."
Romero then scored in the 63rd minute with an assist from Jonathan Partida to seal the win for the Spartans.
"I played forward my whole life, and I used the speed I have to get around the defender. It takes a lot of repetition in practice to get downfield to get a shot on goal," said Romero.
Saint Mary's (1-1-2) outshot San Jose State, 10-6, losing for the first time this season.
The Spartans play next at Cal State Northridge on Thursday, September 14, at 7:00 p.m.
