Fresno, Calif. - Coming off a second place finish at the USF Cross Country Invitational last weekend, the San José State women's cross country team won the Fresno Cross Country Invitational with the top-three runners all wearing a Spartan singlet.
Jennifer Sandoval, a sophomore, won the 5k race at Fresno's Woodward Park with a time of 17:50.3. She crossed the line with junior Adilene Aldapa, who was a tenth of a second behind in 17:50.4. Less than a second behind the first two, senior Jeanette Zambrano rounded out the top three with a 17:51.1.
"It was really good to see them running together," said head coach Brad Wick who was looking for his squad to work on team tactics and run in packs. "I was also happy to see Jeanette rejoin the pack at the front."
In the Spartans second group on the course were freshman Kai Bohannon, junior Carmen Contreras and sophomore Camilla Hanson. They finished in 16th, 17th and 19th places. Bohannon crossed the line in 18:58.2, Contreras finished in 19:01.3 and Hanson came home in 19:39.9.
The Spartans and Cal Poly finished the meet tied with 39 points, but SJSU was awarded the victory in the team competition.
The Fresno Invitational is the second week in a row that San José State's five scoring runners finished in the top-20.
"Mission accomplished," Wick added. "We didn't have to put our a max effort today but still accomplished our goals."
