San Diego, Calif.----- San Jose State University's Miyo Kobayashi won a singles and a doubles match for the second day in a row to conclude the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic I at the Aztec Tennis Center on the San Diego State University campus.
The junior from Japan defeated Jenny Moinard of San Diego State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to go unbeaten in her eight-person singles flight. Kobayashi started the day teaming with freshman Savannah Sendar for a 6-2 win over Grand Canyon's Lana Rinaldi and Celine Buhr for a consolation doubles championship. Kobayashi finished her first week of the 2017-18 season with a 5-1 overall mark in singles and doubles.
"Congratulations to Miyo for winning her draw today. She played very focused winning in straight sets," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka.
As a team, San Jose State had its best performance collectively on the final day of the three-day, seven team tournament. The Spartans were 6-3 in singles and doubles matches compared to 6-6 on each of the first two days.
"I'm very happy with all our singles winners today. Besides Miyo, Julie and Laura both battled to win in the third set. Jackie and Tamara won in straight sets. They all competed great in the big points (in their match)," added the Spartans head coach.
"It's good to see the whole team compete for the first time this season. We have a short week of practice to go over what we saw and get read for the Saint Mary's Fall Invite next weekend."
