Fairfax, Calif.--- San José State junior Kevin Velo had a career-best 14-under par 199 to finish in a second-place tie at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
Velo had scores of 65-65-69 for his 199 on the par 71, 6,743-yard Meadow Club course.
"Kevin's success is attributed to good, old fashioned hard work," said head coach John Kennaday about Velo's best finish at a major college golf tournament. It was the third time in San Jose State history a player posted a 54-hole score under 200.
In two tournaments this season, Velo has a tie for fifth and a tie for second.
The Spartans finished in 10th place at even-par 852 at the tournament hosted by the University of California. The team shot three-over par 287 in the final round.
"We didn't have the outcome we wanted, but I saw some good shots out there," said Coach Kennaday. "This team is close to gaining traction and playing some excellent golf."
Sean Yu shot all three rounds under par, and earned his first top-15 finish as a Spartan. He finished five-under par tied for 14th with a total score of 70-69-69=208.
