Houston, Texas----- Carlos Valdovinos' goal in the 21st minute and an effective defense propelled San Jose State University to its first Western Athletic Conference men's soccer win in a 1-0 victory over Houston Baptist.
Racing down the left side Valdovinos took a pass from teammate Jonathan Partida and beat Houston Baptist goalkeeper Harrison Veith on his left for the only goal of the match. Veith entered the match as the conference's top goalkeeper based on save percentage.
For Valdovinos, one of only three seniors on the team, it was his second goal of the season, both in the last three matches.
The San Jose State defense did its part in the win. Houston Baptist (5-6-0, 2-4 WAC) fired off 13 shots, but none were on goal for a readied David Heredia, who picked up his first shutout as a Spartan.
Veith of Houston Baptist was credited with three saves in the match.
The Spartan win ended an eight-match winless streak of seven losses and a tie.
San Jose State (3-9-1, 1-3-1 WAC) has a short week of practice before heading out for road matches at Incarnate Word on Friday, October 20, and UTRGV on Sunday, October 22. Both matches will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.
