Las Vegas, Nev.---- Jeremy Romero scored in the second half as San Jose State University defeated regular-season champion and #12 Air Force, 1-0, in a Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal round match.
San Jose State (9-10-1) recorded its seventh shutout win of the season and advances to the finals for the first time since 2013. The Spartans now have wins in seven of their last eight contests.
The only goal of the match came in the 73rd minute when Jeremy Romero took Andy Rios' free kick and headed the ball into the top right corner of the cage for his team-high 10th goal of the season. Romero's shot was his only one of the match.
"It was hard. We played the other day and Air Force was fresh, but the adrenaline kept us going... I thought in the first half we were the better team," said the head coach Simon Tobin about the win. "My guys have really been resilient this year and the second half of the season is really showing it."
San Jose State outshot Air Force (14-2-3), 7-6. Spartans goalkeeper David Heredia was credited with three saves to the four for the Falcons' John Wendt.
San Jose State will take a four-match winning streak into the WAC championship match on Sunday, November 12 in Las Vegas at 1:00 p.m.
