Complete NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championship Results
Seattle, Wash. - Continuing the reemergence of San José State cross country, the women's team enjoyed its best result at an NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships in the last 17 years with an eighth place finish on Friday morning.
The best finish by an SJSU women's cross country team, since the 2000-01 season, was 15th in 2006.
"I'm really proud of this team for finishing what they started," Head Coach Brad Wick said. "This result caps off a great year. They believed in the program and the training and executed the game plan week-after-week with great results. To take a program to this level in any amount of time is difficult. The fact that we got this level of effort and competed with the top teams in the region is something very special.
"All year we faced good competition and I knew where we stacked up at the Mountain West Championships. But when you come to a meet like this, with the numbers of great teams that are here, you really see where you stand."
The 2017-18 Spartans never finished outside of the top-10 in any of its six competitions. They have three wins, a second, fourth and now an eighth place finish.
Leading San José State, as she has in each of her 12 races as a Spartan, was second-team Mountain West performer Jennifer Sandoval, who crossed the line in 20:25.8 and 30th place.
Adilene Aldapa and Kai Bohannon were the next two SJSU runners to stop the clock. They finished 47th (20:49.4) and 50th place (20:51.3), respectively.
Rounding out the scoring were Jeanette Zambrano (85th in 21:25.3) and Carmen Contreras (90th in 21:32.0). Camilla Hanson was 167th in 22:30.9.
"Everyone ran really well, and we wouldn't be in this position without an entire team effort," Coach Wick said. "I knew Carmen had a top-100 finish in her today and we needed it. With Arizona State and Portland nipping at our heels her finish was an important component to this result.
"All year we have done a good job of working our way up," Coach Wick said. "I think if you checked the standings after the first kilometer, we weren't looking to good, but we stuck to the game plan and everyone improved as the race progressed. I expected us to be (in the top-10). It was a great day and it's been a great year for this team and this program."
