Irvine, Calif.--- The #11 San José State men's water polo team was defeated 11-8 by #10 Pepperdine in the first round of the Golden Coast Conference Tournament. The Spartans held the Waves to 0-5 on the power play, but it wasn't enough to get the victory.
Leading the Spartans, was GCC Newcomer of the Year Jacob Mercep. The freshman had four goals, one assist, and three steals in the match.
Ben Hauschild had two goals, and two assists against the Waves. Luka Cupic and Bendeguz Toth each helped the Spartans with a goal.
Pepperdine was able to seal the match with a hattrick from Christopher Dilworth, and a pair of goals from Marko Asic and Sean Thomas.
The #11 Spartans will compete for fifth place against #8 UC Santa Barbara Saturday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
