Dec. 30, 2017

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif.----- San José State University had a pair of 15-point leads in the first half and led 46-36 with 8:55 remaining before Colorado State rallied for a 59-52 Mountain West men's basketball victory.

Though Noah Baumann scored a season-high 14 points on a season-high four three-point baskets for San José State (3-10, 0-2 Mountain West) and Ryan Welage added a team-high 16 points, the Spartans' 14 second-half turnovers proved costly in the loss. San José State was charged with 23 turnovers for the second game in a row.

Prentiss Nixon of Colorado State (8-7, 1-1 Mountain West) led all players in scoring with 19 points. Nixon and reserve guard Lorenzo Jenkins each hit a pair of three-point baskets during a 12-2 Rams rally that wiped out the Spartans' last double-digit lead and tied the score at 48-48 with 6:18 in the game.

Robbie Berwick put Colorado State ahead to stay, 50-48, with a pair of free throws. The Rams only made two field goals the rest of the way, but San José State's last field goal was a Keith Fisher III lay-in at the 2:59 mark cutting San José State's deficit to 53-51.

Though Colorado State shot only 35.2 percent from the field for the game, the Rams made 7-of-12 3-point baskets in the second half.

San José State had a 31-20 halftime lead converting 52.0 percent of its first half field goal tries, but finished at 45.7 percent with just eight second-half field goals. Baumann was on target in the first half with 11 points including three three-pointers.

The Spartans out-rebounded Colorado State, 37-29, but lost to the Rams for the 16th time in 16 meetings. Fisher had his third double-figure rebounding game of the season with a game-high 10.

San José State's next chance for its first Mountain West win of the season is Wednesday, January 2, when the Spartans host UNLV in an 8:00 p.m. conference contest.
