Bakersfield, Calif.----- Colleen Humel won both backstroke races and Brittany Heng was first in the 50 and 100 freestyles leading San Jose State University to a 155-143 victory over CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference women's swimming and diving meet.
Humel, a senior from Chicopee, Mass., extended her winning streak in individual backstroke races to 10 in the 2017-18 season posting times of 56.96 in the 100 backstroke and 2:03.16 in the 200 backstroke.
Heng, a senior from Walnut Creek, Calif., touched first in 23.91 in the 50 and 53.10 in the 100 freestyles.
Overall, San Jose State (2-1) and CSU Bakersfield (4-5) each won eight events in the 16-event format. The Spartans opened the dual meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Madsion Grimes, Shona Spikes, Violani Auva'a and Taylor Lehr combined for a 1:47.08. Katie McIntee in the 200 free, Brenna Bushey in the 100 fly and Kylie Fonseca in the 3-meter dive accounted for the remaining first-place San Jose State finishes.
"We had a decent first meet back from the (holiday) break with Humel, McIntee, Fonseca, Bushey and Britt (Brittany) Heng leading the way," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins, who now has 99 career dual meet head coaching wins, all with the Spartans. "We are looking forward to getting a solid practice in tomorrow and competing at UCSD on Tuesday and Wednesday."
The Spartans continue their road trip at UC San Diego with dual meets on January 2 and January 3. On January 2, San Jose State takes on Incarnate Word and UC San Diego at 2:00 p.m. The next day, the Spartans take on the host Tritons at 2:00 p.m.
