Los Angeles, Calif.----- In one of the biggest in-season diving meets on the West Coast, San Jose State University senior Cari Reiswig opened the three-day Bruin Invitational meet with a ninth-place finish in the 1-meter event.

With 55 divers from the Mountain West, Pac-12, Big West and Big Sky conferences, Reiswig qualified for the 18-person final by finishing seventh in the morning preliminary round with a 269.80 for six dives. She bettered her mark with a 277.45 score in the final for a 547.25 total to finish ninth.

The Spartan record holder in the 1-meter dive was ahead of five Pac-12 divers that reached the final and the number-two finisher among Mountain West entries. San Diego State's Alexandra Caplan was fourth at 566.20.

The ninth-place finish matched her placing in the 1-meter at the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Invitational in November, the Spartans' first big diving-only meet of the season.

Reiswig, from Galt, Calif., was one of five Spartans competing in the 1-meter. Senior Kylie Fonseca placed 26th with a 226.10 total. A score of 240.85 was needed to advance to the final round.

Eri Tamada was 41st at 200.30; Megan Au, 42nd, with a 199.15; and Natasha Sondeno, 44th at 197.00.

UCLA's Eloise Belanger was the number-one qualifier in the preliminary round and had the best score in the final to win the event with a 636.00 total. Kassidy Cook of Stanford was second at 584.40.

The Spartans return to the UCLA Bruin Invitational on January 13 with Reiswig, Fonseca, Sondeno and Au competing in the 3-meter event. The preliminary round begins at 10:30 a.m.
