San Jose State University takes a step up the ladder in the early portion of the women's water polo season with matches against three nationally-ranked opponents at the Cal Cup hosted by the University of California, Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28 at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Spartans (1-1) take on #7-ranked UC Irvine (0-0) at 8:30 a.m. and #22-Fresno State (1-2) at 12:45 p.m. on January 27 and #1-ranked and defending NCAA champion Stanford (1-0) at 2:15 p.m. on January 28. San Jose State also has an exhibition match with host Cal prior to the Stanford match at 9:45 a.m.
San Jose State is ranked 16th in the national weekly coaches poll after opening the season with a 13-5 win over Cal State East Bay and an 11-8 loss to #11-UC Davis.
The Spartans have four players among the top-16 scorers in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after the first week of action. Senior Klaudia Paradi and junior Sheila Jensen each have five goals and are tied for eighth. Freshman Lili Urvari and transfer Guara Garcia Delgado are tied for tenth with four scores each.
Senior Katelynn Thompson leads the conference in saves per match at 12.67. She was credited with 11 saves in the UC Davis contest.
