Irvine, Calif.----- The University of Southern California scored on its first six possessions in a 17-1 win over San Jose State University in an opening round women's water polo match at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
Sheila Jensen scored the Spartans only goal of the match in the fourth quarter.
San Jose State (2-7) had chances offensively, but went 0-for-7 on power play opportunities. The USC (8-0) win was the sixth time this season a Trojan opponent was limited to three or fewer goals in a match. USC had more success on the power play going 3-for-8 and also converted all three of its 5-meter penalty shots.
Tayler Peters started in goal for the Spartans. She played the first half and was credited with three saves. Katelynn Thompson took over at the start of the third quarter when the score was 12-0 and made six saves by the end of the match.
USC goalkeeper Victoria Chamorro, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leader in saves per match, had seven.
San Jose State has a doubleheader at the Corona del Mar Pool in Newport Beach, Calif., on Saturday, February 24. The Spartans begin the day with #15-UC San Diego at 11:45 a.m. and will play either #19-CSUN or #11-LMU at the same pool no earlier than 4:00 p.m.
