Six San Jose State University Spartans close out the regular season at the Pac-12 Invitational women's swimming meet Sunday, February 25, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., with hopes of faster times leading into the post-season.
"I'm very excited for our trip to Federal Way," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.
All-Mountain West honorees Colleen Humel and Brenna Bushey, Violani Auva'a, Madison Grimes, Katie McIntee and Taylor Lehr are the San Jose State entries in the meet.
"It's a small group of our top swimmers looking to qualify for post-season," concluded Hopkins. Humel, Bushey and Lehr are qualified for the first year of the National Invitational Championships, in Annapolis, Md., March 8-10.
Bushey and Humel also have NCAA Championships "B-cut" qualifying times. Bushey has the "B-cut" in the 100 butterfly. Humel has her marks in the 100 and 200 backstroke events.
Auva'a is closest to a "B-cut" in the 100 fly. She has a season-best 54.88 in the 100 butterfly and needs a 54.49. Grimes has season bests of 55.32 in the 100 back and 1:59.39 in the 200 back, not far from the "B-cut" standards of 55.09 in the 100 back and 1:59.19 in the 200 back.
Lehr and McIntee scored points for San Jose State at the Mountain West Championships in the 100 free.
A year ago at the Pac-12 Invitational, it was a school record-setting day for Humel in the 100 back with a 53.04 time and Bushey in the 100 butterfly at 53.29.
Since then, both recorded faster times at the recently completed Mountain West Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Humel raced to a 52.70 in the 100 back as the leadoff swimmer in the Spartans' 400 medley relay and was third in the 100 backstroke championship race. Bushey powered her way to 53.10 in the 100 fly qualifying heat before placing second in the championship final at 53.21.
