Stanford, Calif.----- San Jose State University had a rough first day at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament losing to #2-ranked California, 18-3, and #11-ranked UC Davis, 12-8, in first day action.
The Spartans (2-5) are the only team in the early season to face the #1 and #2 teams in the nation according to the Collegiate Water Polo Association's weekly coaches poll. San Jose State closed out the Cal Cup on January 29 losing to #1-Stanford and opened the eight-team Stanford Invitational against the Golden Bears.
The Spartans stayed with two goals of Cal (8-0) throughout the first quarter and trailed 4-2 with 2:01 remaining in the quarter after Klaudia Paradi converted a 5-meter penalty shot for San Jose State. After that, California ran off nine consecutive goals from the end of the first quarter until deep in the third quarter when Sheila Jensen of the Spartans scored at 1:19 leaving San Jose State trailing, 13-3.
Guara Garcia Delgado scored the Spartans' only other goal against Cal.
Tayler Peters was in goal for San Jose State and was credited with seven saves. Cal goalkeepers Cassidy Ball and Madison Tagg combined to make 10 saves.
San Jose State closed out the day losing to UC Davis (3-3) for the second time this season by a 12-8 score. The Spartans had a pair of one-goal leads in the first half, but went into halftime trailing 5-4 when Paige Virgil of the Aggies scored a power-play goal with no time left in the second quarter.
Still trailing by a goal, 7-6, late in the third quarter, Virgil gave UC Davis breathing room with her match-high third and fourth goals of the contest to ignite a five-goal outburst. Jensen again was the Spartans stopper with a score at 5:26 of the fourth quarter.
Garcia Delgado was San Jose State's top scorer in the match with three goals. Lili Urvari scored both of her goals in the first quarter for the Spartans' only other multiple-goal scorer against UC Davis.
Katelynn Thompson played the entire match in goal and was credited with five saves.
San Jose State concludes play in the Stanford Invitational with a pair of matches on February 4. The Spartans take on #9-Michigan at 9:40 a.m. and have an afternoon contest against either Long Beach State or the Chinese National Team in an exhibition match.
