Busy Week Ahead For San Jose State University Men's Golf

Six days, six rounds of golf in two tournaments in adjoining West Coast states lies ahead for the San Jose State University men's golf team during the university's spring break.

The Spartans are one of 16 teams in the Oregon Duck Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, March 26 and 27, at the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club and one of 30 teams at The Goodwin, Thursday, March 29 through March 31, at Harding Park in San Francisco.

San Jose State will play 36 holes on the first day of the Duck Invitational and 18 holes on the second and final day on the par 71, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club course. Four top-50 and five more in the top-100 teams ranked by GolfStat are in the field.

Following a practice day at the fabled Harding Park course on Wednesday, March 28, the Spartans will be in a loaded field with 12 teams ranked in GolfStat's top-50 and eight more in the top-100.

San Jose State is ranked #110 in GolfStat's March 20 national rankings. Recently, the Spartans were eighth out of 15 at the Bandon Dunes Championships and defeated #66-Nevada, 5-1, in 18-hole match-play competition.

The San Jose State lineup for the Oregon Duck Invitational is Kevin Velo, Sean Talmadge, Bryce Wortman, Sean Yu and Ben Campbell. Yu is coming off his best tournament of the season tying for 15th with a four-under par 212 at the Bandon Dunes Championships earlier in the month. Velo continues to lead the team in stroke average at 71.33 and has sub-70 first round scores in two of the team's first three spring season tournaments.

Talmadge has three under-par rounds out of nine this spring. Wortman closed out the Bandon Dunes Championship with his best back-to-back rounds in competition this season with a one-over 72 and a 73. Playing as an individual, Campbell had his best tournament of the season at Bandon Dunes tying for 33rd place with a three-over par 216.

After playing in The Goodwin, the Spartans then will set their sights on hosting the 72nd annual Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Saturday, April 7 & Sunday, April 8. The Western Intercollegiate is the longest running collegiate men's tournament west of the Mississippi. In comparison, the Oregon Duck Invitational is in its 29th year and The Goodwin, once known as the U.S. Intercollegiate, is in its 49th year.
