San Jose, Calif.-The San José State beach volleyball team dropped a pair of duals at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, falling 4-1 to Arizona State and 3-2 to #18 Tulane, at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.
Nandyala Gama and Lyndi Scholl were the only Spartan pair to earn a point against Arizona State. The duo needed three sets to win 19-21, 21-16, 15-9. Thaliana Grajeda and Luiza Andrade won their first set, 21-19, but then fell 21-9 and 15-6.
The other three Spartan pairs lost in straight sets - Julia Golbeck and Ciara Reistad 21-16 and 21-18 in the second position; Hayley Sturgeon and Jamie Hirai 21-9 and 21-14 in the third position; and Summer Avery and Breann Robinson 21-18 and 21-12 in the fifth spot.
Against #18 Tulane, San José State won the first two matches at the fourth and fifth positions. Laura Parts and Kaitlynn Zdroik played in the number-five spot and needed three sets to win 22-20, 19-21, 15-11. Grajeda and Andrade combined for their fourth win of the season to improve to 4-2, winning 21-18, 17-21 and 15-11.
Golbeck and Reistad lost in three sets to the Green Wave, 21-18, 17-21, 15-12. Hirai and Sturgeon fell in the third spot, 21-9, 21-18, and Gama and Scholl lost in straight sets, 21-14, 21-10.
The Spartans play two more duals on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. The team faces Boise State at 8:30 a.m., and California at 2:30 p.m. All matches will be played at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.
