Academic Eligibility
In order to compete in athletics at San José State, a student-athlete must meet specific standards of eligibility, including both SJSU and NCAA continuing eligibility requirements.
San José State Requirements:
- Failure to maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters will result in disqualification from SJSU.
- Failure to remediate within the first year of enrollment will result in disenrollment from SJSU. NCAA Continuing Eligibility Requirements:
1st Year
Full-Time Enrollment: A student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies to practice and/or compete subject to certain exceptions. [Bylaws 14.1.7.1 & 14.1.7.2]
24 Hour Requirement: A student-athlete in his/her first year of enrollment must pass a total of 24 semester hours. [Bylaw 14.4.3.1(a)]
- A maximum of 6 hours of summer school hours may be used towards the 24 hour requirement.
18 Hour Requirement: A student-athlete must pass 18 semester hours during an academic year (excludes summer coursework). [Bylaw 14.4.3.1(b)]
6 Hour Requirement: A student-athlete must pass a minimum of six semester hours during the preceding regular academic term. [Bylaw 14.4.3.1(c)]
Football ONLY: Student-athletes must complete 9 hours during the fall term and earn the Academic Progress Rate eligibility point. If a football student-athlete does not meet this criterion, he shall not be eligible to compete in the first four contests against outside competition in the following playing season. [Bylaw 14.4.3.1.6]
Regaining 2 Contests: A football student-athlete may regain eligibility to compete in the third and fourth contests of that season provided he or she successfully completes at least 27-semester hours. A student-athlete in his initial year of full-time collegiate enrollment at the certifying institution may use credit hours earned at the certifying institution during the summer prior to initial full-time enrollment and credit hours earned during the summer following the regular academic year to satisfy the 27-semester requirement. One Time Exception: During a student-athlete's five-year period of eligibility, a student-athlete who does not successfully complete at least nine-semester hours or eight-quarter hours of academic credit during the fall termor earn the Academic Progress Rate eligibility point for the fall term may regain eligibility to compete in the first four contests against outside competition in the following playing season, provided he or she successfully completes at least 27-semester hours of academic credit before the beginning of the next fall term. A student-athlete in his or her initial year of full-time collegiate enrollment at the certifying institution may use credit hours earned at the certifying institution during the summer prior to initial full-time enrollment and credit hours earned during the summer following the regular academic year to satisfy the 27-semester. 2nd Year
Full-Time Enrollment: A student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies to practice and/or compete subject to certain exceptions. [Bylaws 14.1.7.1 & 14.1.7.2]

1.80 GPA Requirement: A student-athlete who is entering his or her second year of collegiate enrollment shall present a cumulative minimum grade-point average that equals at least 90 percent of the institution's overall cumulative grade-point average required for graduation.[Bylaw 14.4.3.3]
3rd Year
Full-Time Enrollment: A student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies to practice and/or compete subject to certain exceptions. [Bylaws 14.1.7.1 & 14.1.7.2]

1.90 GPA Requirement A student-athlete who is entering his or her third year of collegiate enrollment shall present a cumulative minimum grade-point average that equals 95 percent of the institution's overall cumulative minimum grade-point average required for graduation. [Bylaw 14.4.3.3]
Designation of Degree: A student-athlete shall designate a program of studies leading toward a specific baccalaureate degree prior to participating in competition that occurs during or immediately before the third year of enrollment (fifth semester) and thereafter shall make progress toward that specific degree. [Bylaw 14.4.3.1.7]
40% of Degree Requirement A student-athlete who is entering his or her third year of collegiate enrollment shall have completed successfully at least 40 percent of the course requirements in the student's specific degree program. [Bylaw 14.4.3.2]
4th Year
Full-Time Enrollment: A student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies to practice and/or compete subject to certain exceptions. [Bylaws 14.1.7.1 & 14.1.7.2]

60% of Degree Requirement: A student-athlete who is entering his or her fourth year of collegiate enrollment shall have completed successfully at least 60 percent of the course requirements in the student's specific degree program.[ Bylaw 14.4.3.2]
5th Year
Full-Time Enrollment: A student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies to practice and/or compete subject to certain exceptions. [Bylaws 14.1.7.1 & 14.1.7.2]

80 % of Degree Requirement A student-athlete who is entering his or her fifth year of collegiate enrollment shall have completed successfully at least 80 percent of the course requirements in the student's specific degree program. The course requirements must be in the student's specific degree program. [Bylaw 14.4.3.2]
