Women's Soccer Ties Cal Poly 1-1

Aug. 31, 2018

Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Jamilecxth Becerra's game-tying second half goal led the Spartans to a 1-1 draw in a double overtime thriller at Cal Poly Thursday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. It's Becerra's second goal of the young season.

"The staff and I are super proud of how our team came out and competed from start to finish against a physical Cal Poly team," head coach Lauren Hanson said. "It was a full team effort tonight with a lot of players getting quality minutes."

SJSU started strong on the pitch outshooting Cal Poly 10-5 in the opening half, however the Mustangs were able to strike first in the 33rd minute courtesy of Sydney Knauer and take a 1-0 lead to the half.

It didn't take long for the Spartans (0-2-1) to answer out of the break as Becerra's goal off a beautifully placed assist from Hannah Hall found its mark in the 52nd minute. The shot was one of just five in the period for SJSU while Cal Poly (0-2-2) attempted 11 - none finding their mark.

"To come back and tie a game on the road shows the type of resilience this team has, which is a great quality to have for future games to come," Hanson said.

Spartan freshman Kara Burns, making her first collegiate start, was rock-steady in the goal making nine saves in 110 minutes of work. The product of Lincoln, Calif. made six saves alone in the second half and one in overtime to preserve the draw.

Overall, SJSU attempted 18 shots to the Mustangs' 20. The Spartans now turn their attention to Kansas State, who they welcome to Spartan Soccer Field on Sunday, September 2, at 12:30 p.m. PT.
