Coeur d'Alene, Idaho—The San José State women's golf team finished the first day of the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate in second place after shooting a 10-over 578 for the first two rounds on the par-71 course at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.
Abegail Arevalo led the Spartans over the two rounds and is tied for ninth at one-over 143. She shot a 72 in the first round, followed by an even-par 71 in the second round. Arevalo made 29 pars and three birdies over the two rounds.
Freshmen Natasha Andrea Oon and Antonia Malate are tied for 23rd at three-over 145. Each shot 73-72 on Monday. Oon made two birdies during each round. Malate, making her Spartan debut, made one birdie and 14 pars in her first round, and followed that up with two birdies and 15 pars in round two.
Rounding out the scoring was Alexandra Cooper and Franziska Friedrich who are tied for 39th at six-over 148. Cooper shot 75 and 73 for the two rounds and made four birdies on the day. Friedrich shot 72 and 76 on Monday and made three birdies over the two rounds. She started her first round bogey-bogey before making 15 consecutive pars and ended with a birdie.
San José State is in second place, 18 shots behind leader Illinois who made 36 birdies over the two rounds. The Spartans are one shot in front of Brigham Young and two shots in front of Washington State and Long Beach State. Teams two through 11 in the standings are separated by only 12 shots.
Final round action begins Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The Spartans will play with Illinois and BYU.
