Arevalo Wins Coeur d'Alene Collegiate As Spartans Finish Second

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho—Spartan women's golfer Abegail Arevalo won her second collegiate tournament of her career as she birdied three of her final five holes to capture the individual title at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate in Idaho. San José State finished second in the 18-team field at five-over 857 on the par-71 Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course.

Arevalo shot the low-round of the day with a three-under 68 to win the tournament at two-under 211. She won the tournament by one shot and entered the day trailing Illinois' Crystal Wang by five shots.

Arevalo and Wang played together in the final pairing of the day. Wang started the day at four-under par and had a one-shot lead after two rounds. Arevalo was tied for ninth at one-over par. Both players shot a one-under 34 after the first nine holes of the final round, giving Wang a five-shot lead over Arevalo.

The final nine holes determined who would the individual title in Coeur d'Alene. Arevalo started her final nine holes with a bogey on the par-4 #10 and then made three consecutive pars to find herself at one-over par through 13 holes. Wang started her final nine with three consecutive pars before a quadruple bogey (8) on the par-four #13 moved her back to one-under par for the tournament and with a two-shot lead.

Arevalo then made birdies on #14 (par 3), #15 (par 5) and #17 (par 4) and pars on the other two holes for the one-shot win. On #18, she drove it straight but sent her second shot into a steep rough. Arevalo then hit her third shot perfectly and rolled to within one foot of the hole. She made her one-foot putt for the par and the tournament title.

California's Katherine Zhu also made a run at the tournament title, making pars on seven of her eight final holes with a birdie on #17 to tie Wang for second place.

This is Arevalo's second individual title in exactly six months as she won the MountainView Collegiate on March 25. It is also the second consecutive tournament that Spartan has won the individual title as Natasha Andrea Oon won the Minnesota Invitational two weeks ago.

"I had no idea until I made my final putt on 18 that I was winning," said Arevalo. "My coaches didn't tell me. I came into the day focused on the process and plan for the day and helping my teammates. I wasn't thinking about winning. This win feels great and gives me a lot of confidence for my senior year."

Oon finished her second collegiate tournament tied for 11th at three-over 216. She shot an even-par 71 and made four birdies in the final round.

Alexandra Cooper and Franziska Friedrich tied for 20th at five-over 218, after each shot a one-under 70 on Tuesday. Both made three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars during their rounds.

Antonia Malate finished tied for 29th in her first collegiate tournament. She shot a four-over 75 in the final round with two birdies made.

The Spartans shot the low team-round of the day with a five-under 279 and finished in second place, five shots behind Illinois. SJSU led the tournament in pars made with 192 and made 33 birdies over the three rounds.

"We had an awesome finish and are finishing tournaments well," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann. "We are playing with a lot of confidence and great energy that everyone is feeding off each other. Antonia had two solid rounds to start her collegiate career."

San José State plays next month at the Illinois Women's Invitational, October 8 and 9, at the Medinah Country Club.
