Spartans Fifth at Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Calif. – Led by a top-10 finish from Jose Piña, the San José State men's cross country team placed fifth out of 18 teams at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning. The Spartans totaled 129 points on the 2k layout, over which four laps are run.

Piña, a junior out of San Jose's Lincoln High School, was the first SJSU athlete to cross the finish line. He placed 10th in a time of 24:21.4. The placing was his highest in three races at Stanford and the time is his fastest this season.

Second across the line for San José State was senior Craig Huff in a time of 24:57.7 and in 24th place. Huff, who is rounding into form, cut more than a minute off his time from the season's first race, the USF Cross Country Invitational (9/1/18).

Just behind Huff was fellow senior Huruy Zeratsion. Zeratsion finished 29th place in 25:03.1 which is 25 seconds faster than his effort in the first race this season.

Luis Chavez, a freshman from Mission Viejo, Calif., stopped the clock in 25:18.6 and in 39th place. His time was nearly 30 seconds faster than his 25:46.4 at USF.

In 59th place, Charlie Pope was the last Spartan to score. He crossed the line in 59th place in a time of 25:37.0.

The final two San José State runners to complete the race were Edgar Bonilla (25:37.8 in 60th place) and Evaristo Mateo (26:52.3 in 110th place).

Adams State's Sydney Gidabuday was the first collegiate runner to cross the finish line. He stopped the clock in 23:46.4.

In the team competition, host Stanford was the winner with 26 points. UCLA (53 points) and Adams State (75 points) rounded out the top-3.

The Spartan next race is October 13 in the Adidas/Pre National Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.
