San José State University women's golfers Abegail Arevalo and Natasha Andrea Oon and men's cross country's Jose Piña are the Student-Athletes of the Month for August/September, presented by O'Connor Hospital.
Senior Abegail Arevalo won her second collegiate tournament exactly six months to the date of her first win. She won the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate with a two-under 211. Arevalo shot a three-under 68 in the final round and overcame a five-shot deficit over 45 holes of the tournament. She birdied three of her final five holes to win and made a one-foot putt for par on #18 to seal the win.
Her second title came on September 25, six months from her first collegiate win at the MountainView Collegiate (March 25).
Arevalo was the second-best Spartan finisher at the Minnesota Invitational as she ended in eighth place at even-par 216. She shot a one-under 71 in rounds two and three.
For September, Arevalo had a 71.17 stroke average for six rounds played.
Freshman Natasha Andrea Oon burst onto the scene by winning her first collegiate tournament. She shot nine-under 207 at the Minnesota Invitational to win by six shots. Oon shot a career-best five-under 67 in the first round, which coincidentally fell on her 17th birthday. She also recorded a two-under 70 in the second and third rounds and made her first collegiate eagle on the 54th hole of the tournament, a seven-foot putt.
Oon then followed up that performance with a three-over 216 at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate to tie for 11th place. She shot an even-par 71 in the final round, making four birdies that day.
For September, Oon finished with a 70.5 stroke average in rounds played. She helped the Spartans to the team title at the Minnesota Invitational and a second-place finish at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate. She was also named the Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Month for September.
Pina recorded two top-10 finishes in September for the men's cross country team. He finished third at the USF Cross Country Invitational to start the season. He ran in 24:49.4. From the starters gun, Pina ran in the leading pack and was just edged out by Garrett Corcoran (California - 24:31.2) and Chris Olley (San Francisco - 24:36.8) in the last 1,000 meters. The Spartans finished fifth at the race.
At the Stanford Invitational, Pina was the first SJSU athlete to cross the finish line. He placed 10th in a time of 24:21.4. The placing was his highest in three races at Stanford and the time is his fastest this season. The Spartans placed fifth out of 18 teams.
