Stanford, Calif.—Abegail Arevalo and Natasha Andrea Oon each shot an even-par 71 on Friday as the San José State women's golf team finished fifth after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice at the Stanford Golf Course.
Arevalo and Oon are tied for 14th with four other golfers at 71. That group is four shots behind the five co-leaders who shot a four-under 67 on Friday. Arevalo was one-under for the first nine holes, making a birdie on the par-four #2 and eight pars. She birdied the 10th hole to go to two under, but bogeys on #12 and #18 found her at even par for the day.
Oon started her day par-par-bogey before birdies on #6 and #8 found her at one-under par for the first nine holes. She went to two-under par with a birdie on the par-five #12, but back-to-back bogeys on #14 and #15 put her back at even par. Oon ended the day with three consecutive pars to finish at 71.
Franziska Friedrich is tied for 29th at two-over 73. Over her first nine holes, she made seven pars and bogeys on #2 and #6. She started the back nine with two pars before making a birdie on the par-five #12. Friedrich ended the round with four pars and a bogey on #17.
Alexandra Cooper shot a three-over 74. After shooting five over on the first nine holes, she rebounded back with a two-under 34 on the final nine holes with seven pars and two birdies (#12 & #15).
Antonia Malate rounded out the Spartan scoring with a nine-over 80 and made two birdies during her round.
San José State shot a five-under 289 and are 17 shots behind leader Southern California who shot a 12-under 272 and were the only team under par for the day. The Spartans are only five shots behind second-place Stanford and one shot behind third-place Northwestern and Pepperdine.
Second round action for the Spartans begins Saturday morning at 8:25 a.m. of off the 10th hole.
