Medinah, Ill.—Spartan women's golfers Abegail Arevalo and Alexandra Cooper ended the day in the top-20 after the first two rounds of the Illini Women's Invitational at the Mediah Country Club on Monday. San José State is in fifth place at five-under 571.
Arevalo is tied for fourth place a six-under 138, and is two shots back of leader Michaela Finn of Kent State who is at eight-under par. Arevalo tied her best career round by shooting a five-under 67 in the first round. Starting her rounds on #4, she made pars on seven of her first eight holes with only a bogey on #10. Arevalo then made birdies on three of her next four holes, followed by three pars and ended with birdies on #1, 2, and 3 to end the round with a 67.
Her second round had a similar start, with pars on eight of her first nine holes and a birdie on #5. She then made back-to-back birdies on #13 and #14, and three more pars to be three under through 14 holes. Arevalo then made double bogey on par-5 #18, but followed that up with a birdie on #1 and ended the round bogey-par to shoot a one-under 71.
Cooper is tied for 15th at two-under 142, after shooting 70 and 72 for her rounds. She started her first round similarly to Arevalo by making pars on eight of her first nine holes (#5-13) with just a bogey on #10. Cooper then made birdies on #14, #16 and #2 to go with six pars to shoot a two-under 70 in the first round. In the second round, Cooper made three birdies and three bogeys and 12 pars to shoot an even-par 72.
After shooting an even-par 288 in the first round, the Spartans shot a five-under 283 in round two as no player had a score higher than an even-par 72. Natasha Andrea Oon is tied for 29th at one-over 145 (75-70), while teammate Franziska Friedrich is just one shot behind at two-over 146 (76-70). Antonia Malate shot a four-over 148 (76-72).
For the two rounds, the Spartans made 127 pars and 29 birdies, both the fourth-highest total sin the field. Arevalo is one of five players who are two-under on the par-three holes and is six-under on the par-four holes.
Final round action begins Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CDT/7 a.m. PDT. The Spartans will start on holes 4, 5, 6, and 7 with Miami and Augusta.
