San José State University women's soccer goalkeeper Paige Simoneau and men's cross country's Craig Huff are the Student-Athletes of the Month for October, presented by O'Connor Hospital.
Simoneau posted a 4-1-3 record in the goal for the month of October and tallied five shutouts. The senior allowed five goals in the eight games for a goals against average of 0.57 while making 21 saves. The Corona, California product finished with a clean sheet in five matches, and her 1-0 shutout against Colorado State on Oct. 12 broke the school record for career shutouts. Two matches later, she broke another school record with her eighth shutout on the season, breaking former teammate and current coach Zoe Makrigiannis' single-season record.
Simoneau tallied her final shutout of the regular season on the road against Fresno State in a 0-0 draw, which earned her Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors. The following week, the Spartans got a rematch with the Bulldogs in the opening game of the Mountain West Championship Tournament. Simoneau conceded one goal, but led the team to their first of three wins in the tournament en route to winning the Mountain West Championship.
At the Mountain West Cross Country Championships Huff became the first men's cross country student-athlete to earn All-Mountain West honors in the now sixth year since San José State joined the conference.
The senior from Huntington Beach, Calif., Huff crossed the finish line in 24:58.9 and by virtue of finishing eighth was named a second-team all-MW performer. He was just over three seconds from seventh place and first-team honors.
At the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals Cross Country Invitational, the most prestigious regular season collegiate race of the year, Huff was 62nd in a time of 24:48.3, his fastest 8k time of the season.
