Strong Relay & 6 Spartans In “A” Final On 1st Day Of Minnesota Invitational

Minneapolis, Minn. –––– The Spartans traveled to Minneapolis for the three-day Minnesota Invitational. The first day yielded many successes, including two second-place finishes - the 200 free relay team and Gabby Heng in the 50 freestyle.
 
The first of San Jose State's high-placing finishes, the quartet of Madelyn Sailors, Antoinette Loya, Brenna Bushey and Heng completed the 200 medley relay in 1:32.63. They placed only behind the University of Utah's A team.
 
In the 500 freestyle, two Spartans improved from their preliminary times. Erin Wayman moved from 12th to 11th place, with a final time of 5:04.35. Jamie Dodd jumped from 16th to 12th in the B final following Wayman at 5:08.36.
 
The 200 IM saw a string of solid finishes, starting with Taylor Lehr at 2:06.38 in seventh place. Violani Auva'a in 2:07.65, Kate Hanf in 2:05.51, and Chloe Limargo in 2:05.57, were eighth through tenth, respectively.
 
Heng placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.24, leading a series of strong performances from her fellow Spartan swimmers. Madelyn Sailors followed closely, coming in third at 23.29. Antoinette Loya also posted a strong sixth place time of 23.70.
 
To close the day out in the 400 medley relay, the team of Lehr, Hanf, Bushey and Heng finished third, posting a time of 3:44.95.
 
"We had a solid first day of competition led by our sprinters with both the 'A' and 'B' relays under the qualifying time for the National Invitational Meet (in March) and four qualifying for the championship final. We are looking forward to getting back after it tomorrow," said San Jose State swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.
 
The Spartans return to the pool Friday, November 30, for the second day of the meet.
