This Week In Spartan Athletics - Nov. 5-11

Each Monday check out This Week in San José State Athletics to catch up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

CONGRATULATIONS to the women's soccer team for winning the 2018 Mountain West Tournament Championship! The team earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will play at UCLA this Friday at 6 p.m.

Women's Soccer (9-6-6, 6-2-3 Mountain West)

Last week: For the second time in four years, the Spartans won the Mountain West Women's Soccer Tournament and garnered the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

This Week: San José State begins first-round play in the NCAA Tournament at UCLA this Friday, November 9, at 6 p.m. This is the program's third appearance in the NCAA Tournament and second in the last four years.

Spartan Fact #1: Paige Simoneau made four saves in the championship match and was named the tournament MVP. She extended her single season and career shutout records to 11 and 21, respectively, with the win over New Mexico.

Spartan Fact #2: Four Spartans were named to the all-tournament team - Simoneau,  Jamilecxth Becerra, Kristen Amarikwa and Natasha Harris.

November 9 - NCAA First Round - at UCLA, Wallis Annenberg Stadium, 6 p.m. PT

Football (1-8, 1-4 Mountain West)

Last Week: San José State lost at Wyoming, 24-9, this past Saturday. The team's only touchdown came on a 17-yard Tre Walker catch of a Josh Love pass in the second half. Bryce Crawford made a 26-yard field goal for the team's other score.

This Week: The Spartans travel to #14/#16 Utah State for a Saturday afternoon game in Logan.

Spartan Fact #1: San José State's last win versus a nationally-ranked opponent was a 62-52 triumph over #16-Fresno State, on November 29, 2013. Since then, the Spartans are 0-4 against nationally-ranked opponents.

Spartan Fact #2: Kicker Bryce Crawford was named one of 12 national semifinalists for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy, presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player that best combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement.

Volleyball (12-11, 7-7 Mountain West)

Last Week: San José State split a pair of home matches, defeating New Mexico 3-2 last Thursday before falling 3-1 in a hard-fought match with UNLV on Saturday.

This Week: The Spartans play a split schedule, traveling to Nevada for a Tuesday night match before returning to Spartan Gym on Saturday for the team's final home match of 2018 to face Air Force.

Spartan Fact #1: Seniors Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gávio will be honored after Saturday's match with Air Force.

Spartan Fact #2: Andrade is moved onto the San José State career service ace list last week. She starts the week in 10th place with 119, and has the 10th-best single-season total with 46 service aces this season. Andrade also moved up the MW career digs list and is now 12th at 1,562 digs.

Men's Soccer (7-9-2, 5-5-1 Western Athletic)

Last week: The Spartans fell 2-1 to Seattle U Friday night in the team's final regular season match

This Week: San José State enters the WAC Tournament as the sixth seed and will face #3 Seattle U Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The tournament is being held at Championship Field in Seattle, Wash.

Spartan Fact: Suliman Khorami scored the Spartans only goal against Seattle U in the final regular season game.

Men's Basketball

This Week: The Spartans open the 2018-19 season with home games against Life Pacific on Wednesday and Southern Utah on Saturday.

Spartan Fact: Head coach Jean Prioleau begins his second season at the helm of the Spartan program. He is joined on the bench by assistant coaches Will Kimble, Julius Hodge and Ryan Cooper.

Women's Basketball

This Week: The Spartans open the 2018-19 season with three games this week - home Tuesday night against San Francisco State, away Friday night at San Francisco and away Sunday afternoon at Portland State.

Spartan Fact #1: Head coach Jamie Craighead begins her sixth season at the helm of the San José State program. Joining her on the bench are assistant coaches Alle Moreno, Carlotta Kloppenburg and Arielle Wideman.

Spartan Fact #2: San José State has played 43 season openers and have a 21-22.  Only three of seven head coaches, Sharon Chatman (in 1976-77), Tina Krah (in 1986-87), and Jamie Craighead (in 2013-14) have begun their Spartans career with a win in their first game.  Chatman had seven season-opening victories in her 10 years at the helm of the San José State program (1977-86), the most in Spartans history. The late Janice Richard won six of her seven season openers as the Spartans head coach (1999-2006).  Craighead has won two-of-five season openers leading the Spartans.

Men's and Women's Cross Country

This Week: The Spartans travel to Sacramento for the 2018 NCAA West Regional at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

Spartan Fact (Women): The Spartans finished eighth at the 2017 West Regional. Jennifer Sandoval was team's top finisher in 30th place.

Spartan Fact (Men): San José State finished 21st at last year's West Regional in Seattle. The team was 11th at the 2016 NCAA Regional in Sacramento where Jose Piña finished eighth and advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Women's Tennis

Last Week: San José State competed at the Bronco Invitational.

This Week: The Spartans are competing at the CSUN Fall Invitational this weekend.

Men's Water Polo (6-16, 0-4)

Last Week: The Spartans lost twice at home, 13-11 to Pepperdine on Saturday and 11-8 to Long Beach State on Sunday.

This Week: San José State plays the final regular season match this week at Pacific on Saturday.

Spartan Fact: Cade Baldridge scored twice against Long Beach State on senior day.

This Week: The Spartans compete at UC Santa Cruz this Saturday at 10 a.m.

Spartan Fact: This is first dual meet of the season for the Spartans and the debut of the Spartan divers at this meet.
