Team Effort Key In Spartan Win At Southeast Missouri Friday Night

coCape Girardeau, Mo.—Taylor Chan anchored the Spartan gymnastics team Friday night as she won the all-around title and two event titles as San José State scored a 193.225 in a win at Southeast Missouri. The Redhawks finished the night with a 189.800.

Chan won the all-around with a 39.150, her third consecutive 39.000 or better in the all-around this season. She tied for first on floor with her second 9.900 on the season and won the bars with a career-best 9.825. Chan added a 9.725 on vault and a 9.700 on beam.
 
The Spartans, who are without senior Ellie Pascoe-Long as she was injured in Sunday's meet at Boise State, got solid contributions from the junior and senior classes and key performances from the freshmen and sophomores in the win.
 
Freshman Carli Orcutt had her best meet of the season, score bests of 9.700 on vault and 9.750 on bars and received a 9.725 in her collegiate debut on floor.  Freshmen Tia Gin and Gabrielle De Leon appeared in their first collegiate meet – Gin on bars with an 8.775 and De Leon on beam with a 9.625. Freshman Jasmine Henley added a season-best 9.800 on floor and a 9.425 on beam.
 
"I have never been more proud of a team in my life," said Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers. "Everyone on the team is giving us everything they got. We are so proud of them stepping up their game and being so supportive of each other. I could not have been more proud."
 
The Spartans started the meet on the bars with a 48.000, led by Chan's career-best 9.825. Stephanie Relova recorded a season best 9.800, followed by Orcutt at 9.750, Madilyn Probst at 9.550, Nikki Duggan at 9.075 and Gin at 8.775.
 
San José State opened up a 96.025-93.450 lead over the Redhawks after two rotations. The Spartans scored a 48.025 on the vault, led by Josalyn Ray and Chan who each scored a 9.725. Orcutt recorded another season best with a 9.700, followed by Chelsey Andrada at 9.475, Probst at 9.400 and Trisha Raquel at 9.350.
 
The third rotation was the best for San José State as the floor team posted a season-high 48.825. Chan tied for first with a 9.900, followed by Henley at 9.800, Orcutt at 9.725, Ray and Relova at 9.700 and Andrada at 9.675.
 
In the final rotation, the Spartans scored a 48.375 on beam. Andrada led the team at 9.775, then Chan at 9.700, Relova at 9.675, De Leon at 9.625, Ray at 9.600 and Henley at 9.425.
 
San José State opens the home schedule next Friday, January 25, with a quad meet including Air Force, Alaska Anchorage and Seattle Pacific.
