Berkeley, Calif.----- Olga Descalzi and Tyanna Supreme combined to score nine goals as #14-San Jose State University defeated #11-Long Beach State, 15-8, in a women's water polo match in the Cal Cup hosted by the University of California.
The Spartans (2-1) also lost to #2-Stanford (3-0), 19-4, in their second Cal Cup match of the day.
Descalzi, a freshman from Spain, scored two of her match-high five goals in the first quarter as San Jose State led from start to finish and had a 3-0 lead after her second score. The Spartans led 9-4 at halftime and 12-6 after three quarters.
Supreme, a sophomore from Montreal, Quebec, had a personal single-match best of four goals. She scored twice in the second quarter.
"We have a lot of players capable of stepping up and score a lot of goals for us. More than anything, it was really cool to see everyone playing as a team and different players stepping up and putting their shots away," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi.
"Tyanna was very dominant at 2-meters today (against Long Beach State) and had a nice goal against Stanford. She's getting deep and getting good position. There are a lot of things she is doing well that you won't see on a stat sheet. She is creating really well on offense.
"Both our 2-meter players (Supreme and Matilda Moore) did very well today. Tilly scored her first goal for us. So did Clarissa and Sophie (Spivack) had her first goal against Stanford. There were a lot of firsts today."
Lili Urvari and Sierra Painter, with two each, and Matilda Moore and Clarissa Wandinger, each with one, also scored for the Spartans, which notched its second win of the season against a higher-ranked opponent in the national weekly coaches poll.
Hannah Henry played the entire match in goal for San Jose State and was credited with eight saves in the victory.
Despite the one-sided score in the loss to #2-Stanford, the Spartans became the first team this season to keep the Cardinal under 20 goals.
Descalzi, Supreme, Painter and Sophie Spivack scored for San Jose State.
Henry and Anna Maria Luther shared goalkeeping duties. Henry played the first three quarters and was credited with five saves. Luther did not get credit for a save in the fourth quarter.
San Jose State hosts its first home match of the season, Wednesday, February 13, at the West Valley Aquatic Center. The Spartans will take on a team from the People's Republic of China in an afternoon exhibition match. There is no charge for admission, but there is a $3.00 parking fee to park on campus.
