Women’s Soccer Receives Commendation From San José City Council

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San José City Council honored the San José State University women's soccer team, the 2018 Mountain West champion, during the council's bi-weekly open council meeting. The Spartans received a commendation for their exemplary accomplishments during the 2018 season.

"We were just honored to be recognized by the city with a commendation. It was really just a remarkable experience to be to in there and represent our school, athletics department and program and to be recognized for our accomplishments," head coach Lauren Hanson said.

Coach Hanson, her staff and players were invited to the meeting held at City Hall where they were welcomed by San José Mayor Sam Liccardo and sponsoring council member Dev Davis (District 6). Coach Hanson, along with San José State Athletics Director Marie Tuite addressed those in attendance.

"I just said that I'm really proud of these young women for how they represent our program, our school and athletics department, and how our goal is to bring people together, the community together, on and off the field," Hanson said. "They do such a terrific job of representing our program on the field, academically, and off the field, socially. I'm just really proud of them."

"[Lauren] is such a terrific role model as a coach, as a spouse, as a mom, and most importantly as a person," Tuite said. "We couldn't be more proud of this team behind me. They lead the athletic department. They lead the 21 other programs that we have and the other 540 student-athletes, and we couldn't be more proud of them. Thank you to the mayor, the city council and council members for this wonderful award. We really appreciate it."

The Spartans won their second Mountain West Championship Tournament in the last four seasons in 2018 and had five players named to the Mountain West all-conference team, including three on the first team. SJSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament and broke several records along the way, including setting a conference record with eight shutouts in league play.
