San Diego, Calif. –––– The San Jose State University women's swimmers closed out the week with dual meet wins over Dixie State and University of San Diego in the USD Shootout.
San Jose State defeated USD, 59-32, and beat Dixie State, 68-23. Nevada also was at the meet, but there was no dual meet scoring between the Spartans and the Wolf Pack.
The swimmers started the meet off strong in the 400 medley relay. The A-team of Taylor Lehr, Chloe Limargo, Gabriela Vieira and Gabby Heng finished ahead of the San Diego and Dixie State relay teams with a time of 4:00.88.
Katie McIntee and Daria Cocol scored points for the Spartans in the 200 freestyle. McIntee came in third with 1:58.41 and Cocol came in fifth with 2:00.46.
The Spartans were excellent in the preliminary and semifinal rounds of several races. Limargo completed the 200 IM in third place overall with a time of 2:14.02.
Three San Jose State swimmers had first-place finishes. Vieira took the 50 butterfly with 25.65, Shelby Mullendore won the 50 backstroke with 27.16, and Madelyn Sailors won the 50 freestyle with 24.08.
San Jose State completed the Shootout on a high note finishing the 400 freestyle relay in second place. The team of Antoinette Loya, McIntee, Kendal Guy and Heng posted a final time of 3:35.06.
The swimmers ended the week winning 3-of-5 dual meets. Head coach Sage Hopkins said, " (We) had a solid team performance today, highlighted by Gabi, Maddy, and Shelby winning their events."
The Spartans have a two-week break ahead of them. They return to action Friday, January 18, in Hayward, Calif., against Cal State East Bay.
