#13-Spartans Lose To #5-Hawaii, 13-5, At Barbara Kalbus Invitational

Irvine, Calif.----- The University of Hawaii scored the first four goals of the match and went on to defeat San Jose State University, 13-5, in a Barbara Kalbus Invitational women's water polo match.

The #13-ranked Spartans were led in scoring by Sierra Painter with two goals including the team's first on the final shot of the first quarter. San Jose State (2-2) was scoreless in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing the #5-ranked Rainbow Wahine, 7-1.

Caroline Kerwin, Matilda Moore and Olga Descalzi Portell each scored once for the Spartans.

"We started the game a little rusty and let Hawai'i convert their opportunities early on. We had good moments where we had chances to come back and made the score closer, but did quite put away our shots. We played against a strong Hawai'i team and they played better today," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi.

Three Hawaii players scored twice to share match-high scoring honors with Painter.

Hannah Henry was credited with four saves in goal for San Jose State.  Bridget Layburn started in goal for Hawaii (9-1) and was credited with six saves in three quarters. Molly DiLalla finished up in the fourth quarter and made four saves.

San Jose State continues play in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a 9:15 a.m. match against #17-UC Davis at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach.
