Saratoga, Calif.—The San José State beach volleyball team started the 2019 season with a 4-1 dual win over San Francisco Friday afternoon at the West Valley Beach Courts.
For the third consecutive season, the Spartans started the season with a victory. All four winning pairs needed only two sets for the wins.
Seniors Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrade won 21-10, 22-20, in the second position, while Ryann Thomison and Ciara Reistad had a 21-18, 22-20 win in the third spot. Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik had a 21-16, 22-20 win in position four, and Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog won 21-13, 21-8 in the fifth spot.
Tabea Schwarz and Caitlin Bettenay fell 21-15, 21-18 in the top spot.
Fernanda Vido and Haylee Nelson won 21-12, 21-18 in an a exhibition match.
The Spartans also won an exhibition dual with West Valley, 5-0.
San José State goes on the road next weekend for five contests. The team plays a dual at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, before playing at the Kingsville Tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville. SJSU will face the hosts, Missouri Baptist, Houston Baptist and Louisiana Monroe on Friday and Saturday
