Spartans Split On Day 2 At Barbara Kalbus Invitational

Newport Beach, Calif.----- It was a busy day for San Jose State women's water polo goalkeeper Hannah Henry at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The redshirt freshman from Soquel, Calif., was credited with 28 saves in the Spartans' two matches against #17-UC San Diego and #25-San Diego State.
Henry had 18 saves, nine of them in the fourth quarter and in two 3:00 overtime periods, as #13-San Jose State posted a 10-9 comeback overtime victory over San Diego State in its second match of the day and third of the invitational. The Spartans lost a morning contest to UC San Diego, 14-8.

San Jose State (3-3) trailed San Diego State, 8-6 with 1:16 remaining in the third quarter before getting in gear offensively. Tyanna Supreme scored two of her three goals, one at the end of the third quarter and the only score in the fourth with 4:56 remaining to tie the score at 8-8 and force overtime.

"We found ourselves down by three goals early on and it took a great team effort to come back from that gap to tie the game up. We had two big opportunities in the end of regulation to put the game away, but we came short on both of those shots," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi. "It was very good to see that we never gave up. It really took the whole team to come back and win that game in OT."

Henry's four saves in the fourth quarter was her season best in an 8:00 period and gave the Spartans the overtime opportunity. She would come up with two more in the first 3:00 overtime period as San Jose State took a 9-8 lead on a Michelle Taikeff even-strength score. Olga Descalzi Portell added the last Spartan score of the match with 0:48 on the clock before a San Diego State tally closed out the scoring.

Supreme and Lily Urvari shared team-high scoring honors with three goals each. Caroline Kerwin and Matilda Moore joined in the scoring for the Spartans' first win of the three-day invitational.

Though Henry was credited with 10 saves in the UC San Diego match, San Jose State was unable to keep up with the Tritons in the second and third quarters in a 12-7 loss. The teams were tied at 4-4 before UC San Diego went on a 8-2 scoring spree to take a commanding 12-6 lead going into the final quarter.

"Our execution was not good enough, we missed good opportunities to score and also to make defensive stops, to finish our sequences," Sarusi said about the morning opener against UC San Diego.

The Spartans will return to action for the third and final day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, February 24, at 10:15 a.m. against #17-ranked Long Beach State.
