Women's Golf Sweeps Team, Individual Titles At The Gold Rush

Seal Beach, Calif.—For the second time this season, the San José State women's team won the team and individual titles at a tournament, this week at The Gold Rush held at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, Calif.

Senior Abegail Arevalo and freshman Natasha Andrea Oon tied for first at two-under 214. Arevalo won her second individual title of the season and third of her career, and Oon earned her second individual title in six collegiate tournaments played.
 
Arevalo entered the final round with a three shot lead but shot a 77 in the final round. She made three birdies on the day. However, unlike her bogey-free second round, Arevalo had three bogeys, a double bogey and triple bogey to end the round.
 
Oon began the day in fifth place at even-par 144. She shot a two-under 70 in the final round to tie Arevalo. Oon started the day with five consecutive pars, followed by two birdies and two pars to finish the front nine at two-under par. Over her final nine holes, she went par-bogey-two pars-birdie-and four pars.
 
The Spartans claimed the team title by three shots over Georgia at 873. The team shot a 295 for the final round, making 13 birdies on Tuesday and 40 for the tournament. This is the second team title for SJSU after winning the Minnesota Invitational to start the season.
 
Alexandra Cooper shot her best round of the tournament with a 73 on Tuesday and finished tied for 24th at 224. She started her round making par on seven of her first nine holes and was one-over par at the turn. Cooper them make six more pars before finishing birdie-par-bogey.
 
Franziska Friedrich shot a 75 for her round on Tuesday with two birdies and 11 pars. Antonia Malate shot an 81 in the final round and finished tied for 53rd at 231.
 
San José State next competes at the Juli Inkster Invitational at Meadow Club, hosted by the Spartans and the University of San Francisco, on March 18 and 19. The teams will play 36 holes on the 18th and 18 holes on the 19th.
