Corpus Christi, Texas—The San José State beach volleyball team split a pair of duals played at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday – winning the first dual 3-2 over Texas A&M-Kingsville before falling to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-1.
Against the Javelinas, the Spartans started the day by getting winnings at the fifth and fourth positions. Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog won in straight sets, 21-12, 21-9, in the fifth spot, while Kaitlynn Zdroik and Thaliana Grajeda won 21-12, 15-21, 15-5, in the fourth position.
TAMUK won the second and third positions. Both Spartan pairs forced their matches to three sets. Ryann Thomison and Ciara Reistad, in the third position, fell 21-17, 21-23, 5-15, while Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gávio fell 21-17, 21-23, 8-15.
After the win, the Spartans then faced the host Islanders. SJSU's only win came in the number-five position as Golbeck and Smevog won 21-19, 13-21, 15-8, and are the only undefeated Spartan pair on the season at 3-0.
Zdroik and Grajeda fell in straight sets 21-18 and 21-18, while Thomison and Reistad also lost in straight sets, 21-15 and 21-16. Andrade and Gávio fell 17-21, 21-17, 12-15, and Schwarz and Bettenay lost 21-18 and 21-15.
The Spartans continue playing this weekend at the Emerald Beach Hotel Classic hosted by TAMUK. The team faces Missouri Baptist and TAMUK on Friday and Houston Baptist and Louisiana Monroe on Saturday.
