Women's Gymnastics Travels To State Capital Friday Night

The San José State women's gymnastics team competes Sacramento State each of the next two weeks. The team travels to the state capital Friday night for the first of two meets. The Spartans have already competed at The Nest once this year when Sacramento State hosted the NorCal Classic on January 8. The Spartans scored a 193.300, while Sacramento State had a 190.000.

The teams have three more times to compete against each other. The teams will compete with New Hampshire next Friday, February 15, at The Event Center beginning at 7 p.m. They are two of the four teams at a California quad meet (Cal and Illinois) on Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. The Spartans and Hornets are two of six teams that will compete for the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship on March 24, hosted by Seattle Pacific.

LAST WEEK
On Alumni Night (Feb. 1), the San José State women's gymnastics team made the alums proud as the Spartans had their best meet of the season with a 194.175 team score in a meet with UC Davis and Boise State at The Event Center.

The Spartans started the meet with a season-best 48.475 on vault, led by Chelsey Andrada tying her career best with a 9.875. The bars team scored a 48.625 with only five gymnasts competing. Stephanie Relova had team's top score at 9.800.

The beam team had another solid night with a 48.450 as Taylor Chan had a team high at 9.800. The floor team finished the meet with a 48.625, led again by Chan with a team-high 9.850. Chan scored a 39.125 in the all-around to finish third.

SPARTAN COACHING STAFF
Head coach Joanne Bowers begins her first season at the helm of the San José State program. She is the sixth head coach in the program's now 50-year history in August of 2018.  From 2007 to 2016, Bowers was the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Washington.

James Williams and Jeffrey Langenstein are in their first season as assistant coaches for the Spartans after joining the program in September of 2018. Chelsea Spomer is in her second year with the program, serving as the director of operations for the 2019 season.

MPSF WEEKLY HONORS
For four of the past five weeks, a Spartan gymnast has won an MPSF honor. This week, Carli Orcutt was named the MPSF Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. She, competed on vault, bars and floor in a home meet with UC Davis and Boise State last Friday night. Starting the night on vault, she recorded a season-best 9.725 and also helped the vault team score a season-best 48.475. Moving to bars, she recorded a 9.725, her second-highest score of the season. On floor, Orcutt scored a 9.650 for the Spartans. 

Her other Freshman of the Week honor came on January 22. She helped the team to a 193.225-189.800 win at Southeast Missouri. Orcutt started the night with a season-best 9.750 on bars and followed that up with a 9.700 on vault. She then made her debut on floor in the third rotation with a 9.725. For the meet, she was third on bars, tied for fourth on vault and tied for sixth on floor.

Taylor Chan has received the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week honors twice this year. At Boise State on January 13, Chan tied her career-best score in the all-around with a 39.175. Chan led the team on the bars with a 9.800, the beam with a 9.825 and the floor with a 9.800. She tied for second in the all-around, tied for third on floor and tied for fourth on beam.

At the NorCal Classic on January 6, Chan finished second in the all-around at the NorCal Classic with a 39.025 Sunday afternoon. She was second to Stanford's Kyla Bryant who won every event and the all-around. Chan tied for first on floor with Bryant with a 9.900, and added a 9.800 on beam, 9.700 on vault and 9.625 on bars. Her 39.025 in the all-around was her fifth 39.000+ score in the all-around during her Spartan career.

VAULT TEAM RISES TO TOP ON ALUMNI NIGHT
The Spartan vault team recorded a season-best 48.475 in a home meet with UC Davis and Boise State. Chelsey Andrada led the team as she tied her career high with a 9.875. The reigning MPSF Vault Champion, her score tied the third-highest score in school history.

SPARTANS WITH FLOOR BEST AT SEMO
The Spartan floor team recorded a season-best 48.825 in the win at Southeast Missouri on January 18. Taylor Chan led the team as she tied first with a 9.90. Freshman Jasmine Henley had a season-best 9.8000, while fellow freshman Carli Orcutt recorded a 9.725 in her first collegiate floor routine. Josalyn Ray and Stephanie Relova each had a 9.700, and Chelsey Andrada had a 9.675.

CHAN TIES FOR FLOOR TITLE AT NORCAL CLASSIC
Taylor Chan
started the 2019 season by tying for first on the floor with a 9.900 at the NorCal Classic. She tied with Kyla Bryant of Stanford for the first event title of the season.
