Folsom, Calif.—The San José State beach volleyball team split two contests on Friday, falling 3-2 to Saint Mary's before defeating Sacramento State, 4-1, at the Livermore Park in Folsom, Calif.
Against the Gaels, two Spartan pairs won. Kaitlynn Zdroik and Thaliana Grajeda needed three sets to win 12-21, 21-19, 15-12, while Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog won in straight sets 21-13, 21-16.
Those same two Spartan pairs won again versus Sacramento State. Zdroik and Grajeda played three sets again to win 21-13, 19-21, 15-12, while Golbeck and Smevog won 21-6, 21-11. Caitlin Bettenay and Tabea Schwarz won 21-17 and 21-15, and Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrade won 21-17 and 21-16. Fernanda Vido and Ryann Thomison played together for the first time this season but fell 22-20, 18-21, 15-10.
The Spartans are now 6-6 on the season and face San Francisco and Sacramento Saturday in Folsom.
