This Week In Spartan Athletics - March 4-10

Men's Basketball (4-24, 1-15)
This Week: San José State hosts Wyoming Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., before traveling to Fresno State Saturday night at 4 p.m. Wednesday night's game is also Senior Night as Oumar Barry will be honored prior to the game.

Last Week: The Spartans picked up their first Mountain West win of the season with an 89-82 victory over New Mexico at home last Tuesday. The team then lost at San Diego State 84-56 Saturday night.

Spartan Fact: Junior forward Michael Steadman tallied his third-straight double-double at San Diego State Saturday in Viejas Arena. Steadman finished the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was his 10th of the season, which is the third-most in the conference.

Women's Basketball (5-22, 4-12)
This Week: The Spartans being the week with a game at Wyoming Monday night. SJSU hosts Fresno State Thursday night at 7 p.m., in the final home game of the season. Thursday night is also Senior Night, and Andrea Kohlhaas will be honored prior to the game.

Last Week: The team split a pair of games last week, losing at New Mexico, 110-72, last Wednesday, before returning to The Event Center for an 84-76 win over San Diego State Saturday afternoon.

Spartan Fact #1: Analyss Benally's 31 points against San Diego State destroyed her previous career-high of 17 points against Boise State on February 19, and are the most a Spartan has scored since Dezz Ramos dropped 37 on the Utah State Aggies in Logan on February 22, 2017.  The Shiprock, N.M. native's seven three pointers are a career-best and were one short of the program record, but tied The Event Center record which she now shares with Rebecca Woodberry, Danada Smith and Kari Steele.

Spartan Fact #2: Danae Marquez scored nine points and dished out 15 assists, a career best and one assist shy of the program and The Event Center records, which are held by Williams.  Williams had 16 in a game against Tulsa in the 2002-03 season, and she equaled Liz Keough who had the same against Stanislaus State in the 1976-77 season.

Women's Gymnastics
This Week: San José State hosts California this Friday night in the final home meet of the season and Senior Night.
 
Last Week: The Spartans scored a 194.075 in a win at Seattle Pacific.
 
Spartan Fact: Three Spartans won four event titles and the all-around title last Friday night. Chelsey Andrada and Taylor Chan tied for first on vault, Kaprece Nadonza tied for first on bars, and Chan won the beam, floor and all-around titles.
 
Spartan Face #2: Five seniors will participate in their final home on Friday - Kaprece Nadonza, Ellie Pascoe-Long, Josalyn Ray, Stephanie Relova and Michelle Shalit.

Baseball (7-4, 1-2)
This Week: The Spartans are scheduled to play four games this week. In a change of venues, SJSU and San Francisco will play in the city Tuesday afternoon, followed by three-game series with Air Force on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Last Week: The team went 2-2, with a win over Saint Mary's, 7-3, before going 1-2 in New Mexico, losing 14-2 and 7-6, before rebounding with a 22-18 win to end the series on Sunday.

Spartan Fact: Sunday's game at New Mexico took 4:52 minutes and there were 40 combined runs in the game. The Spartans tallied 26 hits in the win, which are the most since recording 30 at New Mexico State on May 8, 2009. The team's 22 runs were the most since plating 31 vs. Chicago State on March 18, 2009.

Spartan Fact #2: Kellen Strahm, the Mountain West's batting average leader, was sensational at the plate finishing 5-for-6 with four RBI, two stolen bases and a 3-run homerun in the in the fourth inning. The junior outfield from Eugene, Ore., is the first player with a 5-hit game this season and the first Spartan to do so since Shane Timmons at Santa Clara on April 10, 2018.

Softball (10-7)
This Week: The Spartan softball team hosts the Silicon Valley Classic II this weekend at the Spartan Softball Complex.

Last Week: The team went 1-2 at the San Diego Classic with two cancelled games last weekend. The Spartans defeated Brigham Young, 2-1, before falling to Long Beach State, 5-0, and Illinois-Chicago, 12-3 in 6 innings.

Spartan Fact: In the Spartans 2-1 over BYU, Arianna Miranda hit the first pitch she saw over the left field fence, driving in the only two Spartan runs.

Women's Golf
This Week: The 35th-ranked Spartans are currently practicing in preparation for the Juli Inkster Invitational at Meadow Club, March 18 and 19, hosted by SJSU and San Francisco.

Last Week: The Spartans swept the team and individual titles at The Gold Rush. It marked the second time this season thate SJSU won both titles, after winning both at the Minnesota Invitational

Spartan Fact: Senior Abegail Arevalo and freshman Natasha Andrea Oon tied for first at two-under 214. Arevalo won her second individual title of the season and third of her career, and Oon earned her second individual title in six collegiate tournaments played. They were also named Mountain West Co-Women's Golfers of the Week for their accomplishment.

Football
This Week: Spring football practice starts on Tuesday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Beach Volleyball (4-3)
This Week: The Spartans play three times this week - Friday at Sacramento State and twice on Sunday - vs. Saint Mary's and Stanford.

Last Week: The Spartans went 3-3 in Texas last week.

Spartan Fact: Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog are 7-0 on the season, the only undefeated Spartan pair this season. They needed three sets to win against the Houston Baptist pair, 19-21, 21-16, 15-13, and were the only point scored by the Spartans against ULM, winning 18-21, 21-19, 15-12.

Men's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are practicing for the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bend, Ore., March 10-12.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans were tied for fifth early Monday afternoon with San Diego State. Kevin Velo shot a three-under 69 in the first round.

Women's Tennis (4-2)
This Week: The Spartans play twice this week at the Spartan Tennis Complex - Friday vs. Pacific and Sunday vs. Grand Canyon.

Last Match: The Spartans did not play as their match was rescheduled to April 12.

Spartan Fact: Alba Pedrero Galindo is 14-8 in singles in her first year at the major college level.

Women's Water Polo (4-4)
This Week: The Spartans travel to Los Angeles to play at USC on Friday and to Riverside for the CBU Invite hosted by Cal Baptist on Saturday to face Cal Baptist and Concordia.

Last Week: San José State won at Santa Clara, 11-7.

Spartan Fact: Freshman Olga Descalzi Portell led all players matching her single-match season-high of five goals in the win. She needed just six shots to score five times. Four of her five goals were even-strength scores for the Spartans.
