#19-Spartans Edged By #21-San Diego State, 10-9, In 4OT

Tempe, Ariz. ----- For the second time this season, San Jose State and San Diego State went to overtime in a non-conference women's water polo match with the score tied, 9-9, at the end of four quarters.

The Spartans won the first encounter, 10-9, with overtime goals by Michelle Taikeff and Olga Descalzi Portell, at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in late February.

Despite wiping out a 3-0 first-quarter deficit and going into halftime tied at 5-5, #19 San Jose State lost to #21-San Diego State, 10-9, in four overtimes of a non-conference women's water polo match.

San Diego State's Shelby Kraft scored an even-strength goal as the Aztecs (13-12) won the opening sprint of the eighth period and won on the first possession. Neither team scored in the first two 3:00 overtime periods nor in the seventh period, which is a 3:00 sudden-victory stanza.

San Jose State (9-11) was looking to complete a three-match sweep of its weekend matches after outlasting #8-Arizona State, 9-7, and defeating Siena, 17-6, and get back to the .500 mark for the season but came up short.

"I was very pleased with the team's overall performance even though it wasn't a perfect weekend. We improved in a lot of areas. We played well as a team. Things started coming together like team defense and shooting," said San Jose State head coach Gabor Sarusi. "More people are stepping up.

"(The San Diego State game) It was anybody's game. This time, we came out on the losing side, but it was a real good weekend for us. We played our best team defense of the season, especially against Arizona State. We had a lot of field blocks (against the Sun Devils).

Descalzi Portell and Tyanna Supreme each scored three times in regulation to lead the Spartans in the second meeting between these teams. Riley Agerbeek scored twice for the second consecutive match and Caroline Kerwin scored once for San Jose State.

For Supreme, she now has 32 goals to become the Spartans' second 30-plus goal scorer in 2019 behind Descalzi Portell, who leads the team with 48 scores.

San Jose State goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with 13 saves. The San Diego State match is the seventh time this season she had 10 or more saves in a match regardless of its length.

San Diego State goalkeeper Maura Cantoni matched her season-high of 17 saves.

The Spartans now have played five overtime matches this season, three of them going in sudden-victory circumstances. Four of the scores ended up, 10-9, with San Jose State's only overtime triumph this season being the earlier victory over San Diego State.

The Spartans return to action Sunday, April 7, hosting UCLA, at West Valley College in a 12:00 p.m. Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. San Jose State's next home match also is Alumni Day.
