Spartans Unable To Avoid Sweep, Fall 6-1 To Fresno State

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  San Jose State baseball was held in check by Fresno State as the Bulldogs completed the series sweep with a 6-1 win Saturday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. The Spartans were limited to just four hits in the loss.
 
Fresno State (24-12, 11-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Emilie Nogales laced a 2-RBI single to right field. The Bulldogs went on to plate two more in the sixth and one apiece in the seventh and ninth innings for insurance.
 
SJSU's lone run came across in the third as Aaron Pleschner plated Brandon Peterson on a sacrifice fly. Peterson was the Spartans' most productive offensive player for the evening with one hit in three tries while scoring a run and swiping two bases.
 
After tallying three hits through the first three innings, the Spartan bats were held in check for the rest of the contest, securing just one hit over the final seven innings, a one-out double by Connor Konishi in the ninth.


 
With the loss, SJSU (18-22, 12-9) drops from the top of the conference standings as Fresno State claimed the spot. Starter Jonathan Clark (2-1) was charged with the loss after 6.0 innings of work. He scattered seven hits and struck out five while being responsible for four runs. Wesley Clawson and Nicholas Morales also spent time on the bump in relief duty combining for four hits and two runs allowed.
 
Fresno State starter Nikoh Mitchell picked up the win to improve to 2-4 while Ryan Sullivan earned his first save of the season.
