Spartans' Olga Descalzi Portell Named All-MPSF

Woodland, Calif.----- Olga Descalzi Portell, the leading scorer on the 2019 San Jose State University women's water polo team, was named to two All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) all-conference teams in a vote by the league's seven coaches.

A freshman from Terrassa, Spain, Descalzi Portell was named a second-team All-MPSF selection and to the conference's All-Newcomer team.

During the regular season, Descalzi Portell scored 50 goals in 23 matches. Heading into the MPSF Tournament on April 26, she ranks tied for fifth in the conference in goals scored per match and is the MPSF's highest scoring freshman for number of goals. Descalzi Portell is the first San Jose State player since the 2016 season to score at least 50 goals in a season.

"These honors are well-deserved. Olga made an immediate impact for our team. She was really hard to guard on offense and she stepped up in a big way on defense for us. She did a lot of things on defense that doesn't show up on the stat sheet like defensive stops, blocks and steals," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach gabor Sarusi.

She was the only freshman named either first or second-team All-MPSF.

San Jose State (10-13), seeded #5 in the MPSF Tournament, takes on #4-seed Cal (15-6), in a 2:30 p.m. quarterfinal round match hosted by Stanford. During the regular season, the Golden Bears defeated the Spartans, 10-6.
