Baseball Unable To Avoid Sweep To Nevada

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  San Jose State baseball's offensive woes continued as they were held to four hits in a 3-2 loss Sunday in the series finale vs. Nevada at Excite Ballpark. The Spartans were unable to avoid the sweep as they dropped to 19-32 overall and 12-15 in league play.

Troy Viola blasted a solo homerun in the bottom of the second to give SJSU an early 1-0 lead, but that lead didn't last as Nevada tied the game in the fifth on a passed ball. The Wolfpack then tacked on two more runs in the sixth on back-to-back singles.

SJSU got one back in the eighth as Nick Knecht flied out to deep right with two aboard, but they were unable to bring anymore across in the ninth as Wolfpack reliever Grant Ford closed the door to pick up his fourth save of the season.

In a theme that plagued the Spartans all weekend, runners left on base continued to be a major issue as they left nine aboard. Multiple runners were left on board in three different innings.

San Jose State pitching continued to look impressive as the trio of Jonathan Clark, Justin Watland and Wesley Clawson combined for nine hits against and six strikeouts. They stranded 12 Nevada runners on base.

Watland (0-1) was charged with the loss while Nevada's Dalton Gomez (4-2) picked up the win.

The Spartans will attempt to keep their postseason hopes alive next week as they travel to Air Force for their final regular-season series of the year. Game one is set for Friday at 12:00 p.m. PT.
