Spartans Learn Patience At NCAA Championship Friday

Fayetteville, Ark.—San José State learned many lessons during the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, but the Spartan women's golfers may have learned to be patient on the 6,397-yard, par 73 Blessings Golf Club course.

The Spartans finished in the day in 22nd place after shooting a 324. The team started the day in the second groups in the morning wave. Right away, the Spartans needed their patience as pace of play had slowed as it took groups ahead of them almost an hour to play the first three holes (10-12).

The team also needed patience in making the first birdies round as the Spartans didn't record their first birdie until the 28th hole played by Franziska Friedrich on the par-5 #15. She followed that up with a birdie on the par-4 #16, hitting her second shot within three feet of the hole for a putt for birdie. She added a third birdie on the par-5, 560-yard #5.

The Spartans top golfers on the season paced the team in the first round as Abegail Arevalo and Natasha Andrea Oon are tied for 53rd at six-over 79. Friedrich is tied for 81st at eight-over 81. Antonia Malate shot a 12-over 85 and is tied for112, while Alexandra Cooper is 18-over at 91 and tied for 131.

Most rounds playing in the morning, including San José State, averaged 5 ½-6 hours.  Because of that, the morning tee times were moved back to 7 a.m. CT for Saturday. The afternoon times were left as originally scheduled.

The top-seven teams in the standings were in the afternoon wave. Texas and host Arkansas lead after the first round at 10-over 302. Stanford and Arizona are tied for third at 12-over 302. Arizona's Biana Pagdanganan has a three-shot lead on the individual leaderboard after shooting a four-under 69. Three others shot one-under par, and the other 128 players finished with over-par scores. Half the field shot an 80 or higher.

San José State begins round two action Saturday at 1:01 p.m. CT/11:01 a.m. PT. Fans can follow live scoring at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=17030
